Ray Fanning believes the goal is not to find someone a franchise.
The goal is to help that person make the right decision.
As a Business Ownership Advisor and Franchise Educator, Ray helps professionals determine whether business ownership makes sense for them—and, when it does, identify opportunities aligned with their goals, finances, preferred lifestyle, strengths and long-term vision.
Ray does not begin by presenting franchise brands. He begins by understanding the person.
Together, Ray and each prospective business owner develop a clear ownership strategy before considering specific opportunities. He then guides them through a structured education and investigation process designed to replace assumptions with facts.
Ray calls this the Informed Decision Process. Its purpose is to help prospective owners ask better questions, evaluate opportunities objectively, and reach a decision they can confidently own.
Prospective owners learn to compare business models, assess franchisor leadership and support, validate opportunities with existing owners, and determine whether a business fits the role they want to play and the life they want to build.
Ray brings a perspective that few business ownership advisors can offer. He has served as president of Microplay Interactive, vice president and director of franchise operations for Case Handyman Services, and chief operating officer of the international Levante Restaurant Group.
He has also experienced franchising as an investor and franchise partner, allowing him to evaluate opportunities from multiple sides of the table—as an advisor, operator, executive, and owner.
Ray joined FranChoice as an independent consultant in 2002 and is a shareholder in the company. For more than two decades, he has helped prospective business owners navigate career transitions, evaluate ownership opportunities, and make important financial, professional, and lifestyle decisions.
He is also the co-founder of Hire Your Best Boss, a business ownership education and advisory platform built around a simple philosophy: decisions over deals, process over guesswork, education over persuasion, and truth over comfort.
Ray earned his MBA from the University of Maryland and has lectured on franchising at Georgetown University, the University of Maryland, and for professional organizations.
Prospective business owners value Ray’s candid, direct, and no-pressure guidance. He challenges assumptions and explains when an opportunity does not fit—even when that means recommending that someone walk away.
Ray measures success by the quality of the decision—and by whether the path chosen truly supports the life that person wants to build.
