When Bill was 25 he started his own retail, manufacturing, distribution, advertising, marketing, healthcare-related start-up eyewear business called America’s Best Contacts & Eyeglasses. As he grew his company, he opened more than 100 stores with the help and dedication of more than 1550 employees and 150 eye doctors in 25 states. Eventually, annual sales well exceeded $100 million as America’s Best became one of the best known brands in the country serving millions of customers.
As was reported at the time, Bill sold the company for $24 million in 1990. He bought it back for $40 million in 1993, and then sold it again in 1997 for $50 million. He continued running the company that entire time, from its beginning in 1978 through his decision for its final sale under his leadership as Chairman & CEO, allowing him to embark upon new challenges and chapters in his life and career.
Bill understands everything that’s involved with new businesses. What it’s like starting out, going from 1 store to 2 to 4 and beyond. Bill has dealt with every imaginable aspect of business (and some unimaginable), providing him with a rare understanding about opening and growing new businesses.
After his final sale of his business, Bill chose to spend valuable time with his family while volunteering in his community. He started his own consulting firm and assisted various investment and private equity firms, as well as serving on Advisory/Boards of Directors. He advised individuals and institutional investors whether to purchase particular businesses, how to improve a business’s operations, and profitability, etc. Occasionally, he even provided some requested advice for America’s Best at various stages of its continued growth.
